PRIVACY & CONFIDENTIALITY

With the rise of our dependency over the social networking tools and the innovations in new media privacy & Confidentiality are today's two main concerns of the society. The question now is what can we call as private? All our information is being saved in large databases online. In my opinion not a single detail of life is private anymore. Starting from our daily patterns of life from what we eat, what we wear , what do we do , when we go to work etc can be determine from the patterns of our credit history , our purchases, our internet use and so on.
With our increasing reliance on internet and our day to day phone data connections , we want to be connected to the world in some way. But in order to do so we need to compromise our personal information too. Through emails, twitter , facebook , linkedin etc we keep updating our statuses. Although there are various walls are in place to limit the use of our personal information that we do not want to share with everyone, but it can't be completely hidden. Also , the companies , banks and organizations etc who collect our personal information and promise to keep it confidential can change their terms and conditions in future and can share it with the third party for marketing purposes. Thus , in future i don't think nothing would be private or confidential anymore.

  1. I agree with you. Many trusty companies that compromise not to disclose our personal information can change their policies and give our personal information to any other companies or people who request them. In the future as you say that privacy and confidentiality won’t be a big problem because we are getting adapting and accepting these disadvantages by continuing using social networking sites. Also, we know that losing privacy and confidentiality not only affecting to a group of people, instead it affects to everybody who use SNS. So, all our information is valuable for companies that want to know the activities and habits of their customers.

  2. I guess we all have a moral responsibility towards educating the next person about the disadvantages of these new social networking sites. We have a responsibility to monitor and help our near and dear ones who are unaware of the risk that these social networking and many other online sites pose. We are lucky that we are in education pipeline and this CIS 3810 Principle for New Media is a great skills and eye opener for addressing these issues of online privacy and confidentiality. We as a class have already seen so much power in the works through home work and assigments to regulate and contribute to the contents of these new media communication. We all have to keep our eyes open and make sure to alert our kith and kins to restrict freely giving out sensitive information on these social networking sites.
