Creativity: User Generated Content

Innovation takes place in the presence of creativity. Due to current fast pace digital age when everything is user generated , the creativity is also at its peak. Through the constant user interaction in the form of reviews , blogs , twitter, Facebook and even status updates, users are constantly participating in brainstorming and creating new ideas. In other words all the users from all around the world are generating new concepts of new media.

An example is mentioned in the New York Times article "Twitter Serves Up Ideas From Its Follower", twitter uses the users ideas and discussions and uses them in new features like the use of @ to refer to a person comment. Similarly Flickr emerged as a result of users participation. Similarly, Youtube is an example of user generated content and creativity. A lot of artist have emerged from user's participation on you tube. Creativity on these networks is collective and everyone anywhere can contribute in some way.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds like "Second Reality" can be viewed as our second lives online. These are in the form of animation of our own characters and do not have to portray our real lives. We can be anyone and anything and can interact in a 3D virtual environment. And as mentioned in the assigned reading "Social Influence and diffusion of user-created content" the current digital age made it all possible for users to interact and share in these worlds.

Like the dynamic nature of social networking sites, these virtual worlds are evolving. Previously their use was limited to gaming , the gaming virtual communities are constantly increasing and it has transformed the whole gaming industry. Not only that most of the business and organizations have adopted the virtual modeling for their business for several purposes like , marketing , internal communication, planning, fashion etc. For example as mention in the New York Times article the example of Chelsea hotel model created on second life that provides a close resemblance to reality. IBM created virtual community for the employees interactions.

Moreover, virtual communities are being created for autistic people, where they can live a second life and do anything possible. Platforms like Second life, Viles etc. have it all possible for user to access where ever they want in virtual reality. These virtual worlds are creative in the sense that they allow us to maintain and perform that we can't possibly achieve in our lives. The 3D aspect also foster creativity, we can create our own worlds.

I think in future we will see more dependence on these virtual communities. Like we are more relying on technology in every field of our lives, these virtual communities are growing at fast pace. It is possible that like facebook and twitter we will see another era of these virtual communities to get that popularity world wide.

Social Networking Sites

As I mentioned in my previous blog that there are several different networking sites through which we can communicate and share our thoughts and a lot more. Two of the most famous and most visited social networking sites nowadays are twitter and facebook. Both of these sites provide a platform for users to interact in their own unique styles. However, there are some restrictions in both of these channels.

Facebook provides an impression of more casual environment, the users can add each other in their "friends list". Whether we add a friend , relative or any acquaintance or even an unknown person, that user adds in our friend's list. Now we have the option to further classify them in our relatives, close friend's lists and create any other list we want, but all our "friends" can be viewed in one long list. On the other hand in twitter user instead of being added in a single lost list "follow" each other. The main difference is the use of 140 characters per tweet including the # tag.

Also, the main difference i noticed is facebook's use is more preferred by the young users where as twitter is mostly used by professionals. Different companies prefer to update and tweet their status, news and announcements through twitter as compared to facebook. Also the status update i believe on facebook can  more generalize and defined as compared to twitter. Due to the use of # tag twitter is a little bit confusing to a new user as compared to facebook, facebook allowance to post anything without restriction of words and contents makes it easy to use. for example people keep posting their updated day to day pictures , favorite music, status updates etc.

Twitter I believe provides a platform for constant discussion and thus more about sharing of thoughts rather than content. Because of the large traffic of tweets the use of # tag and @ to reply a specific tweet makes is more user fiendly. Nowadays most of these networking sites are pretty popular. Although most of the people don't like facebook outline , still they prefer it over twitter.

I like both of the sites, but I personally do not spend a lot of time on facebook and do not check everyone status every now then , since the longer is your friends list the more time you are going to spend on it. Rather its better to involve or follow a useful discussion on twitter. But at any rate both are very popular networking sites of this current age

Social Networking

Social networking is basically used to connect people in every aspect of their lives. Various and complex platforms/ websites are established in corporation to easy access and correspondence among colleges. Institutions like CUNY are using it connect students and teachers as well as student to student by setting up Blackboard for all the college portals so students and teachers can communicate frequently and openly. Such platforms are beneficial because they have shrunk the gaps in communication.

It has also apparently become an important enigma in defining one. According to the article titled Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting by Langfitt, Frank published in NPR, recruiters and companies are looking at the social networking websites as Linkdin before hiring potential candidates. It is a way for candidates to present themselves in certain light they would want others, in this case recruiters, to see. It definitely saves a lot of time and money for both the candidate and the recruiters which would have been spent contacting and setting up interviews and what not.

The aspect of social networking that is somewhat alarming  is issues of privacy. As discussed in  the article:  Leaving 'Friendprints': How Online Social Networks Are Redefining Privacy and Personal Security, users of websites such as facebook or myspace make whole profiles explaining, discussing updating their personal lives, relationships and families that it is easier to judge and use that information to target even steal their identity. Such people can also become target of telemarketers and other business's interests not necessarily illegal.

I think social networking has become an essential component of our lives and there is no escape possible, but it does not have to rule our lives as I see people in trains, buses and sidewalks engrossed in their smartphones checking  social networking websites and updating minute by minutes status. I never  thought that terms as cyber bullying would be possible to coin when I was in high school. The technology is progressing at unfathomable speed and we hold the reins as consumers to lead it in either direction.

Blogs vs. Wikis

In this new or current age two most important social media networking channels are Blogs and Wikis.  Through both of these channels people all over the world, irrespective of their culture, class, race etc., can contribute their knowledge, ideas, believes and comments on different sites. These reviews could be about products, services, political and social issues, science, culture, tradition, thus on anything possible. They could be about any thing. It shows the fact that in today's networking world an individual's opinion matters.

The function of both blogs and Wikis is similar: to communicate and share information, but they do so in different ways. Blogs are consisted of different posts or entries by different individuals, it is open to anyone to post personal opinion on anything and anyone. Blogs present prejudice of one kind or another.  Unlike Blogs, Wikis are the not only opinion oriented but can be modified in a source of knowledge and information. Through wikis several organizations, institutes and groups can allow access to users to contribute and edit the content. Wikis are online databases where most of the times access is given to the user to edit, modify and add the text, images, media etc in several wikis, leading them to be unreliable in some cases. Classified internal Wikis can be created by different organization and access is given to certain number of users with expertise and knowledge about a certain area/category. Now slowly these wikis are moving toward unclassified approach as mentioned in New York Times article An Internal Wiki That’s Not Classified an example of such a wiki is "Diplopedia" that allows access and contribution to all the people working in the United States.

Blogs can also lead to collaborations and can result in bringing a big change and overcome obstacles. As mention in New York Times article Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid  the community collaborated by posting complains and concernss on their blog to get rid of illegal activities in the neighborhood. The bloggers on BayRidgeTalk not only provided daily activities at the premises but also provided leads for police to investigate, take action and arrest the criminals.

Convergence is playing an important role in today's networked world by converting all the information to new modes of presentation and making them widely available in many forms of media: audio video, ebooks etc. However, it cannot be denied that the older form of information as books might become extinct. Nowadays, everyone can access movies to books on their ipad or smartphones that a hard copy of a book is hardly picked up. Almost all the magazines have online version to keep their readers involved. I think it is true for economically established countries than under developed countries where the technology is not as easily accessible/affordable as here. A message that is delivered in minimum three days can now be delivered in real time because the communication has evolved so much due to convergence.
